Elizabeth "Liz" Sherman is a petite (5'3" tall), dark-haired woman in her early thirties, with brown eyes and long black hair. She always dresses in black, and has a weakness for oversized sweaters and big heavy boots. She is an agent with the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, where she helps to keep the world safe from the kind of threats that the cops can't save you from. She has been with the BPRD off and on since she was 16 years old; for years, she left when the urge to lead a normal life became too much for her, but she always returned. The BPRD is the only home she has.

Liz is a pyrokinetic; a firestarter with devastating raw power, though she hates the words 'pyrokinetic' and 'firestarter.' (Pyrokinesis sounds like psychosis, and firestarter -- no.) Her body temperature is several degrees warmer than an average human being's, and she can call blue flames to hand at will. The small stuff, she can easily do. The big stuff is a different story. Liz is slowly learning to harness her powers and use them for her own purposes, but it wasn't always that way. Up until recently, when she was hurt, angry, and frightened enough, she would lose control, unable to hold back the fire. The largest of these explosions took place in 1985 and 2002. In '85, when hurt by bullies, 11-year-old Liz exploded, killing every person in the courtyard and the neighboring apartment complex, including her mother. In 2002, on a mission in an abandoned steel town outside of Pittsburgh, when she was attacked by body-possessing demons, the explosion was a mile wide. Liz and fellow (fireproof) agent Hellboy were the only survivors.

Liz is smart, sardonic, suspicious, and capable; she tends to keep to herself and who she knows, though she's warm once you get to know her. It takes a great deal to earn her trust, but once it's earned, it -- and her loyalty -- are earned for life. She loves silent movies, photography, and her big red ape of a boyfriend. She has undergone years of therapy for guilt and clinical depression, including a long stint in Bellamie Psychiatric Hospital in New York City. She spent years bottling her powers up, hating them, afraid to use them, afraid to hurt someone again.

She's more confident now.
